A Homeschool Mom’s Prayer on Turning 50

Turning 50 has stirred up more thoughts than I expected. As a homeschool mom, wife, daughter, and follower of Jesus, I’ve found myself looking back with gratitude, wrestling honestly with regret, and asking God for grace for the road ahead.

As I approached the big 5-0, my mind swirled more and more, pondering the life I’ve lived thus far and the woman God is still shaping me to become.

Interestingly, I found myself a little girl again, dreaming about what the future would be.

I remember how tiny I was (maybe five?) the day I asked Jesus into my heart. I recall how terrible I felt and how I cried when the young Sunday school teacher told me it was my fault Jesus had to die on the cross. Oh, but that He didn’t stay that way. He came back to life, and that if I asked for forgiveness, Jesus would come live in my heart and give me a mansion in heaven one day. Sounded like a great deal to me 🙂

Anyway,

This week, as my birthday drew near, I wondered about my life. Have I made a mark in my circle of the world that God has given me? Have I been faithful? Could I have done more? And what of the places that I’ve never overcome? Never experienced victory. What excuse do I have? Will I run out of time? What would that little girl say to me if she were here right now?

Needless to say, it’s been a long week.

The enemy of our souls is very good at discouragement. And getting us to focus on what isn’t instead of what is – well, that’s his specialty. But today, as I opened my journal and wrote, “Good morning, Lord, Happy birthday to me.” A cleansing and encouraging prayer flowed.

I share not because I’m so great, but goodness gracious, our God Almighty IS.

If you are reading these words from a place of discouragement, I pray you would find encouragement here. Because in the end, we can do nothing apart from God’s help, and He is ever ready the moment we ask.

A Birthday Prayer for My 50th Year

Good morning Lord,

50 years old

Happy birthday to me!

Thank you for my life. While it’s true I have been wrestling with thoughts about how I could have lived this life better, I am still overwhelmed with gratitude that You would give me the life I have.

So many things I would not have chosen have been blessings in disguise. That’s why I am so glad that You are God and I am not.

Thank you for my mom and dad, and for the strong spiritual foundation that they gave me.

Thank you for my brothers and sisters to share formative life experiences with, creating unique bonds, unlike with any other people on the planet.

Thank you for my husband, and for allowing him to find me in my most vulnerable young adult years. I shudder to think of all the things that could’ve happened and how my life might have been different if that had not been the case. My, how our lives are blessed.

Thank you for our children, each one supremely unique and special in every way. Oh, how my days have been filled with joy, being able to share my life with them as their mom.

Thank you for our church and how these precious people have enriched our lives.

Thank you for Create A Homeschool Life and the outlet it provides to encourage and share my homeschool life experiences. The irony being that so often You use the experience to encourage me. How amazing that is.

Thank you for my voice to praise and sing and to worship with words, even when I can’t sing.

While yes, there are places of tender regret in my life of things I wish I had done better and other things I still long for victory, none of that diminishes my overwhelming gratitude for my life and all the good that is in it.

I pray today would be a good day, that I would find favor in your sight, and mercy and grace to live this day, and indeed the rest of my life, to the absolute fullest.

That I would mirror the destined plan you created for me to live.

Leaving nothing undone

Experiencing it all

Infuse me with your grace and strength for the rest of my journey. That I might not weaken but instead grow stronger.

Becoming…

Always becoming…

Becoming more and more of the woman you forever intended for me to be.

Daughter of the Most High

Full of grace and truth.

A warrior

Transformed

Like you

May I be victorious and strong. Not shrinking back but ever courageous.

With steps sure, steady, and Spirit-filled as I walk in love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

For the honor and glory of your name, and so that when I see you face to face, you will say.

“Well done, my girl, well done.” 🥹

In Jesus’ name! Amen!

I stepped away from the moment, walking in peace, taking comfort in the truth that God is not finished with me. Not just yet. Nor is He finished with you!

If this birthday prayer encouraged you, I pray you’ll take a quiet moment with the Lord and remember: He is still writing your story, too.

Learning, growing, trusting ~ together.

Much love,
